How to Use Brown Rice Flour in the PF Tek Method
- Ingredients Needed:
- 2 parts vermiculite
- 1 part water
- 1 part brown rice flour
- Preparation Steps:
- Mix the vermiculite and water in a bowl until evenly hydrated.
- Add brown rice flour and mix thoroughly to coat the vermiculite.
- Fill sterilized bags or jars with the mixture, leaving space at the top for a dry vermiculite layer as a contamination barrier.
- Sterilize the bags or jars in a pressure cooker or boiling pot for 90 minutes.
This is where our products come in to save you the previous steps.Â
- Inoculation:
- Once the bags/jars cool, inoculate them with your chosen spore syringe.
- Store the jars in a warm, dark environment to allow colonization.
- Fruit Your Cakes:
- After full colonization, birth the cakes and transfer them to a fruiting chamber for optimal mushroom growth.

Step-by-Step Guide to Setting Up a Shotgun Fruiting Chamber (SGFC) and Caring for Your Cakes
The Shotgun Fruiting Chamber (SGFC) is a simple and effective way to fruit your PF Tek cakes. This guide will walk you through the setup process and provide essential tips for caring for your cakes to ensure healthy mushroom growth.
What is a Shotgun Fruiting Chamber?
The SGFC is a low-cost, DIY fruiting chamber designed to provide optimal humidity, fresh air exchange, and light for your mushroom cakes. It’s ideal for beginners and works perfectly with PF Tek cakes.
Materials Needed
- A clear plastic storage tub (40-70 liters, depending on the number of cakes).
- A drill with a 1/4-inch drill bit.
- Perlite (about 3-5 inches deep for the bottom of the tub).
- Water spray bottle (for misting).
- Aluminum foil or jar lids (to place under the cakes).
- Hygrometer (optional but helpful to monitor humidity).
Setting Up the Shotgun Fruiting Chamber
- Prepare the Tub:
- Use the drill to make evenly spaced holes (about 2 inches apart) on all six sides of the tub: the bottom, top, and all four sides. These holes allow for proper air exchange.
- Add Perlite:
- Rinse the perlite thoroughly with clean water until it’s saturated but not dripping wet.
- Add about 3–5 inches of wet perlite to the bottom of the tub. This creates a humid microclimate inside the chamber.
- Place the Cakes:
- After your cakes are fully colonized and have been dunked and rolled in vermiculite (see below), place them on small squares of aluminum foil or jar lids on top of the perlite. This keeps them elevated and prevents direct contact with the wet perlite.
- Position the Chamber:
- Place the SGFC in a location with indirect natural light or provide artificial light using a 6500K daylight bulb. Light helps trigger fruiting but should not be too intense or direct.
Preparing the Cakes for Fruiting
- Dunk and Roll:
- Once your cakes are fully colonized, remove them from the jars.
- Submerge the cakes in clean water for 24 hours to rehydrate them (this is called “dunking”).
- Roll the hydrated cakes in dry vermiculite. This layer helps retain moisture and supports mushroom growth.
- Place in the SGFC:
- Set the cakes on their designated spots in the fruiting chamber.
Caring for the Cakes in the Fruiting Chamber
- Humidity Maintenance:
- Mist the walls of the SGFC and the cakes 2–3 times daily using a water spray bottle. Avoid directly soaking the cakes; a light mist is sufficient.
- The perlite will help maintain high humidity, but regular misting ensures optimal conditions. Aim for 90–100% humidity.
- Fresh Air Exchange (FAE):
- Gently fan the chamber with the lid for 30–60 seconds after misting to introduce fresh air. This prevents carbon dioxide buildup and encourages healthy mushroom growth.
- Temperature:
- Keep the fruiting chamber in a room with a stable temperature of 20–25°C (68–77°F). Avoid placing it near heating vents, air conditioners, or direct sunlight.
- Light:
- Provide indirect light for 12 hours a day to stimulate pin formation and healthy growth.
What to Expect During Fruiting
- Pin Formation: Within 5–10 days, you’ll notice small pinheads (baby mushrooms) forming on the cakes. This indicates that fruiting conditions are optimal.
- Growth: Pins will grow rapidly into full-sized mushrooms over the next few days. Continue misting and fanning daily during this period.
- Harvesting: Mushrooms are ready to harvest when the caps open and the veil underneath begins to tear. Twist and gently pull them off the cake to avoid damaging the substrate.
Tips for Success
- Hydration: If the cakes begin to look dry, you can dunk them again between flushes to rehydrate them.
- Second Flush: After harvesting the first batch, the cakes may produce additional flushes of mushrooms. Simply continue misting and fanning.
- Contamination: Keep the chamber clean and avoid handling the cakes directly to minimize contamination risks.
