What is a monotub?
A monotub is a bulk mushroom fruiting chamber made from a plastic storage tub, commonly 45L or 66L, modified with 6-10mm holes covered in polyfil or micropore filter patches for passive gas exchange. Unlike jar or bag-based methods, a monotub holds several litres to tens of litres of pasteurised or sterilised bulk substrate, typically coco coir, vermiculite and gypsum, or a grain-to-bulk ratio, allowing mycelium to fully colonise a larger surface area and produce multiple flushes per substrate batch. The tub’s depth and surface area are the main yield drivers, not the container material itself.
How do you use a monotub for mushrooms?
Fill the tub with a bulk substrate layer, add spawn at roughly a 1:2 to 1:4 spawn-to-substrate ratio, mix or layer evenly, then close the lid with filter patches intact. Keep the tub at 21-24 degrees C in the dark until fully colonised – a solid white mat with no visible unspawned substrate. At that point, move to fruiting conditions: indirect light on a 12-hour cycle, 85-95% relative humidity, and daily fresh air exchange to trigger pinning. Harvest each flush before veils drop, then rest the substrate 5-7 days between flushes.
How long does it take a monotub to colonise?
Full colonisation typically takes 10-21 days at a stable 21-24 degrees C, depending on spawn ratio, substrate sterility and strain vigour. Higher spawn ratios (1:2) colonise faster than lean ratios (1:4) but cost more spawn per batch. Contamination risk rises the longer colonisation takes, since uncolonised substrate is more vulnerable to competing moulds – most contamination becomes visible in the first 5-10 days if sterile technique was inadequate.
How much does a monotub yield?
A well-run 45L monotub with properly hydrated bulk substrate typically produces 0.5-1kg fresh weight per flush across 2-3 flushes, so 1-3kg total fresh weight per substrate batch is a realistic range for gourmet species under good conditions. Yield depends heavily on substrate hydration (field capacity, not waterlogged), fresh air exchange consistency, and strain – biological efficiency (fresh weight harvested divided by dry substrate weight) is the more useful metric than raw kilograms if you are comparing substrate recipes.
Do mushroom grow kits work?
Pre-inoculated kits work reliably provided the substrate was properly sterilised or pasteurised before spawning and the kit has not been left uncolonised for an extended period before purchase. The main failure points mirror DIY setups: fluctuating temperature during colonisation, inadequate fresh air exchange at fruiting causing tall thin stems with small caps, or the substrate drying out before pinning. A kit removes the sterilisation and spawn-production steps, not the fruiting-condition requirements – you still need to manage humidity, light cycle and fresh air exchange yourself.
How long do mushroom grow kits last?
Unopened, most kits store for 1-3 months in a cool, dark place before spawn vigour starts to decline, though this varies by species and substrate type. Once opened and colonising, expect 2-4 weeks to full colonisation, then 2-3 flushes over roughly 4-6 weeks of fruiting before substrate exhaustion. Total usable life from an unopened kit to the final flush is typically 8-12 weeks.
Are mushroom grow kits legal in the UK?
Grow kits and substrates sold for cultivating gourmet and culinary mushroom species (oyster, lion’s mane, shiitake and similar) are legal to buy, own and use in the UK. Legality depends entirely on the species being grown: certain fungi are controlled regardless of growth stage, including spore and mycelium form in some interpretations, so it is the buyer’s responsibility to confirm the legal status of any specific species before ordering.
