To make a spawn jar using Mycology Synthetic Filter Discs, follow these steps:
Materials:
- Wide-mouth jar with lid
- Mycology synthetic filter discs (0.22-micron recommended)
- Drill and 8mm-13mm drill bit
- Alcohol swabs
- Rye grain or other substrate for spawn
Steps:
- Prepare the Jar Lid:
- Drill a clean 8mm-13mm hole in the jar lid.
- Smooth out any sharp edges around the hole to avoid damaging the filter disc.
- Clean and Apply the Filter Disc:
- Clean the area around the hole with an alcohol swab and let it dry.
- Peel the synthetic filter disc’s adhesive backing and apply it firmly over the hole to ensure an airtight seal.
- Prepare and Fill the Jar:
- Add pre-sterilized rye grain or another substrate into the jar, ensuring there’s room for gas exchange.
- Secure the lid onto the jar.
- Sterilization:
- Sterilize the filled jar by pressure cooking it at 15 psi for 90 minutes to ensure the substrate is free from contamination.
- Inoculation:
- After cooling, inoculate the jar with your preferred mushroom spores or liquid culture through the filter port (if using an injection port).
- Incubation:
- Store the inoculated jar in a warm, dark place at around 24-27°C (75-80°F) for optimal colonization. The filter will allow for gas exchange while preventing contaminants from entering.
