50/50 Coir Tek for Mushroom Cultivation

What You’ll Need:

  • Coco Coir Brick: 1 brick (650 grams) of coco coir. This is the base of the substrate and holds moisture well.
  • Vermiculite: 2 quarts of vermiculite. Vermiculite improves aeration and moisture retention.
  • Water: 4-5 quarts of hot water (for proper hydration of the coir and vermiculite).
  • Gypsum (optional): 1 cup. Gypsum adds calcium and sulfur, which helps improve the structure and quality of the substrate.
  • Bucket with Lid: A 5-gallon bucket to mix and pasteurize the substrate.
  • Large Pot or Kettle: To heat water for the hydration process.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Coir coir brick and Vermiculite Mix:
    • Place the brick of coco coir brick and the measured vermiculite into a clean 5-gallon bucket. If you’re using gypsum, add it in at this stage as well.
  2. Heat Water:
    • Bring 4-5 quarts of water to a near boil. The hot water will hydrate and pasteurize the coir and vermiculite mixture.
  3. Hydrate the Substrate:
    • Slowly pour the hot water over the coir and vermiculite mix in the bucket. Be sure to cover the entire mixture evenly to ensure proper hydration.
    • After pouring the water, quickly stir the mixture with a clean spoon or a stick to ensure the water is distributed evenly.
  4. Cover and Let Sit:
    • Put the lid on the bucket and let the substrate sit for 60-90 minutes. This allows the coir and vermiculite to fully absorb the water and achieve the right consistency for mushroom growth.
  5. Fluff the Substrate:
    • After the resting period, open the bucket and fluff the substrate with your hands or a spoon. The coir should be fully hydrated but not too wet. If you squeeze a handful of the substrate, only a few drops of water should come out.
  6. Check Moisture Content:
    • Perform a “squeeze test” to check the moisture level. Grab a handful of the substrate and squeeze it. If a few drops of water come out, it’s perfect. If it’s too dry, add a bit more water. If too wet, allow it to sit uncovered for a bit to let some moisture evaporate.
  7. Cool and Use the Substrate:
    • Once the substrate has reached the proper moisture level and has cooled down, it’s ready to be used. You can now add it to your mushroom grow tubs or containers for spawning.

Using the Substrate:

  • Spawn to Substrate: After preparing your 50/50 coir tek substrate, you can mix it with colonized rye grain spawn (usually in a 1:2 ratio of spawn to substrate) in your grow tub or monotub45L.
  • Fruiting: Once the mycelium fully colonizes the substrate, you can proceed to fruiting by introducing fresh air exchange and light.

Benefits of this 50/50 Coir Tek:

  • Simple and Effective: It’s easy to prepare with minimal ingredients and offers excellent results for mushroom growers.
  • Moisture Retention: The 50/50 coir and vermiculite mix provides the right moisture levels for mushrooms, reducing the need for constant misting.
  • Contamination Resistance: Coco coir is naturally resistant to contamination, making this method ideal for mushroom growing, especially for beginners.
  • Affordable and Accessible: Both coco coir and vermiculite are affordable and readily available, making this tek cost-effective.

By following the 50/50 Coir Tek, you’ll have a well-prepared substrate that provides a great foundation for your mushrooms to grow, whether you’re a novice or an experienced mycologist
